Charles (CJ) Harkola is a Syracuse native and graduate of West Genesee High School (including a degree from New Visions Environmental Studies inaugural class), Finger Lakes Community College (Associate’s in environmental studies) and Niagara University (Bachelors in Sports & Tourism Marketing).  After traveling to South America in 2024, I was inspired to start a company to connect others in nature called “Local Eco Guides”. During my time there, I learned from local guides about developing best practices in sustainable guiding. Contact me for a walk in nature to learn and grow together in conservation efforts.

Where do you work and what is your position? I have worked as the Director of Marketing & Sales with The Nurse Connection Staffing, Inc. since 2014

What other groups are you part of in the community? Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps, I am the Advisory Board member involved with coordinating restoration and cleanup projects

What are your hobbies and interests? I own a business for guiding: birding (currently over 550 life birds), forest bathing, nature walks & other tours offered. 

Do you play any sports? Which are your favorites? Snowboarding, Golfing, Hiking, Birding (it’s a competitive sport)! 

Is there an unusual fact about yourself that you are willing to share? I am a NYS Master Naturalist through Cornell Cooperative Extension

What is your favorite snack? Cookies and milk before bed each night
